Alley Dwellers

When I snuck back out of the heavy metal door I saw Mari. I smiled to myself and immediatly placed my gun in between her eyes. I didn't want to lower it, but I knew that with Parlat standing right there it wouldn't be a good idea for me to shoot her.

((Parlat's POV))

"Zakuro this is not the time for stupid grudges. Mari and I need to go right now." I said to her on the verge of anger.

((Mari))

I just sat calmly. I could take her on if she even tried to hurt me but now was not the time. "Lower your gun. Please" I said through clenched teeth. Saying please to a sewer rat was like poison. She lowered her gun and backed up. "Where are you going?" She asked forcefully.
"We don't have to answer to you, Zakuro." Parlat spat at her. She seemed to be offended but I didn't care. I pushed her out of the way and started to run. "Don't follow us." I heard Parlat order her. I looked back and saw her stomp off as Parlat ran after me.

I followed from underground. None of the other sewer runners dared to come into my tunnels, not even Parlat. Everyone who had ever tried to enter, had never come back out. I could easily hear their steps above me, while they had no way of knowing I was here.

We stopped where the Great member was. Parlat stood in awe. "I thought..."
"Yea so did everyone else." I said. The Great Members hadn't shown themselves in years. We thought them to be just legend but now here was one.
"Hello Parlat, Mari." Rondo said to us. "I have some business we need to speak about but we must go onto the roofs to talk. I sense someone under the ground listening to us." He winked and signed that he really meant out of the city. We both nodded and climbed up onto the roofs. We would travel quicker on the roofs. In a matter of minutes we were out of the city and out of the reach of the sewer runner tunnels.
"What is this business you need to talk to us about?" I asked. I knew Parlat was thinking the same thing.
"The Great members are getting older and we need to replace them soon. One has already died and we need to replace him with your best member, Mari." I sighed and nodded. I knew this was coming. The moment my father died I knew.
"Unjam is my second in command and one of my closest friends. He will do perfectly. Do the Great members still want to be known as legend, Rondo?"
"Yes. I can set up a death scene but we need our fliers to help out."
"What are fliers?" Parlat asked.
"Airships." Rondo answered. I gasped. Airships had been forbidden in the world. Most of the 'bags' don't even know about airships because it was recently taken out of the cities history but for the colonies, more gypsies, we knew all about them because we still had blueprints. Many of our engineers tried to construct one but failed. I only nodded thoughtfully. I would have to tell Unjam soon. They would have to take him immediately.

I knw something was up. But i did not know what. I leaned against the wall thinking to myself.

I appeared suddenly, I was very good at that. I watched Kilev long enough to know that he wasn't paying attention. I stepped into the half-light and almost laughed as he jumped. "They're hiding some thing big from us. The one with them is old beyond compare and carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. I may not like you, but I know I can't do this alone. Our leaders are keeping something from us that we should know. Good leadership comes only from the followers." I kept my voice low enough that only Kilev would hear it.

Parlat and I parted from Rondo and walked back to the city. He said goodnight and made sure I had my gun just in case and then stole off into the night. I ran to my alley, in the secluded part of the city, near the boarder walls. Most bags don't go out that far only because it is infested with Alley dwellers. I settled down for the night and tried to sleep but I knew that because of the Great Member's visit I wouldn't get any sleep.

I was feeling good about tonight, so i thought i was going to kill a few sewer runners. As i started to enter our domain i saw Parlat.
"what are you doing up so late," i ask him
"My job," he said gruffly as he left.
"wow, he's pushy," i sighed deciding that tonight wasnt a good night to kill anyone. I decided to sleep with the Alley Dwellers, i was more like them anyway.

"why would I want the help of the sewer runner?" I said coldly,

"Why would you help me? You wouldn't be helping me, you would be helping your people. If the leaders insist on keeping vital information from us, then why should they lead us?" I looked slightly innocent, just enough so that Kilev would believe me.

I fiddle with my knife for a second. "they have their reasons. but the old man was not normal"

Not being able to sleep I had went for a walk and found Zakuro and Kilev talking.
"No he wasn't normal but he is none of your concern. We have our reasons for keeping secrets. Maybe when your older we will tell you." I said rudely to Zakuro. She got upset then. I found myself staring down the barrel of her gun.
"I'm older than you!" She shouted.
"And you are also on Alley Dweller territory. You shoot me, they shoot you. You see, Zakuro, there are many things that you are and I am not, like your not a leader. I am. You blow your temper a lot. I don't. You see how different we are? now go crawl into your hole and leave our jobs to us. Parlat and I will handle it. You don't know what you're dealing with, trying to mess with our jobs."

"to tell you the truth I know you are up to something. and I am going to find out what" I whisperd into my leaders ear before slipping away.

I disregarded Kilev's comment and slipped into the shadows myself before Zakuro could say anything else.

I hissed at the shadows around me before quickly disappearing again. I causiously and silently returned to my alcove.

I paced around for a while. I still needed to talk to Unjam about this whole thing. It was going down tomorrow and he still didn't know about it.
