I was silent for a moment then said. "why are you even paying attention to me now?"

Time passed in what seemed like hours. "I don't think I am the same person I was a week ago-I'm changing for the better..I think."

"then that makes two of us.. I think"

I smiled at that. "Can I tell you something?"

"yeah, go ahead"

"You know me as Ella, the cheerleader, homecoming princess, everything right? Perfect at everything, graceful...But I hate it. Being popular and loved any everything was great freshman year, in junior high and everything but its starting to get tough. I want to be a good girl, but I just don't know how."

"well, you just took the first step"

"What should I do now though? Nobody would recognize me if tomorrow I showed up having quit the team. I wouldn't have any friends."

"but are your freinds even real freinds, or do they just hang out with you because you are the popular girl and they want to be popular too?"

I thought about that. Chelsie and Shelby had become more and more distant the past few weeks anyways. Maybe I wasn't too far away from being Eleanor: the part of me who loved learning, who always took notes in blue ink.
"You'll be my friend right?"

"of course I will."

A small grin crossed my face and I pulled the car to a stop in front of Ian's house.
"Thank you. For helping me to understand." With that I leaned over a kissed him on the cheek. "Goodnight"

I smiled "goodnight" I walked into my house. it still didn't feel like home yet. but at least there was someone who seemed happy to see me there.

Driving home everything seemed...different. As if the world itself was different.

I sat in my room thinking about ella. I saw a better person in there. I just had to help her come out.

That night I fell asleep thinking of Ian and how he was still able to make the most of everything, his perfect grades and evident interest in science...I wondered if he liked biology...yet at the same time I had the strange urge to protect him.

In the morning I got dressed in a baseball shirt and knee shorts with tennis shoes to match. My books went into an actual backpack as opposed to an oversized tote bag. Today I would be different. I would be myself.

I got dressed for school. I would drive myself today.
