Why do they call it flea market when they don't really sell fleas?

Lol. I asked myself the same. I went to a flea market in Paris once and it's just -wikipedia source- "a type of bazaar where inexpensive or secondhand goods are sold or bartered"
So, I still wonder why it's called like that.
